Peru decides to open a consulate in Dakhla, signaling its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara
Peruvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Carlos Espá y Garcés Alvear expressed, on Thursday in New York, his country’s support for “the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and its sovereignty over the Sahara,” as well as its support for “the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative for the Sahara, considering it a just, lasting and acceptable political solution for all parties.”
The announcement was made in a joint communiqué signed following talks between Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and his Peruvian counterpart, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The communiqué states that Peru “expressed its readiness to open a Consulate in the city of Dakhla, which will serve as a platform for access to African markets for Peruvian products.”
The communiqué further underscores Peru’s full support for “Resolution 2797, adopted by the United Nations Security Council in October 2025, which gave new impetus to the process of settling the dispute over the Sahara on the basis of the aforementioned Moroccan Initiative.”
